Do I Speak Dutch Yet? Rethinking Language and Integration. This lecture explores the everyday realities of language learning and integration, in the Netherlands and beyond.
Through examples from sociolinguistic and anthropological research, we will look at how language learning is a shared responsibility between newcomers and native speakers, and how even a few words can create belonging.
Bio: Janet Connor is an Assistant Professor at the Leiden University Centre for Linguistics. As a linguistic anthropologist, she explores how the ways we speak and listen shape everyday life. Her research spans listening practices in the Norwegian welfare state to the role of regional and minority languages in France. Originally from the United States, she has lived in both Norway and the Netherlands and so knows first-hand the challenges and rewards of learning a local language, even in places where “everyone speaks English.”
